Blue metal for concrete

Mixing on site? The classic mix is 4 parts 20 mm blue metal, 2 parts sand and 1 part cement. For thin slabs, paths and around pipework, 10 mm aggregate gives an easier working mix.

Drainage that keeps working

For ag lines and retaining walls, clean single sized aggregate matters: no fines to clog the pipe or the geofabric. Our drainage gravel is washed and screened for exactly that job.

How much do I need?

Allow roughly 1.5 tonnes per cubic metre for blue metal aggregate. A standard drainage trench (300 mm wide, 400 mm deep) uses about 0.18 tonnes per metre.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use 10 mm or 20 mm blue metal?

Use 10 mm for concrete in thin slabs and paths, pipe bedding and decorative topping, where a smaller stone gives an easier working mix. Use 20 mm for structural concrete, driveways and drainage behind retaining walls.

What is the difference between drainage gravel and blue metal?

Drainage gravel is washed, single-sized 20 mm aggregate with no fines, so water moves freely and ag lines and geofabric do not clog. Standard blue metal is the same crushed rock but is chosen for concrete and structural uses.

How many tonnes of aggregate per cubic metre?

Allow roughly 1.5 tonnes per cubic metre for blue metal aggregate. A standard drainage trench 300 mm wide and 400 mm deep uses about 0.18 tonnes per metre of trench.

What is the minimum delivery?
